I hope you're all ready for the long weekend and to celebrate the 4th of July. Here's the construction update, complete with work zone map and current status pictures to help you navigate Downtown Greeneville this holiday weekend. Enjoy the parade!
Our stormwater crews are installing the stormwater drain system on Depot Street between Cutler Street and Irish Street. This work zone is a lane closure mostly on the south side of the road. Please proceed with caution through this partial closure. The Federal Courthouse and the Post Office will remain accessible from the Cutler Street side of the block.
Depot Street between Irish Street and Main Street will remain closed as our crews continue with the installation of new communication and electrical conduit. Grading will begin next week, after the long weekend, in preparation for concrete crews to begin their work. No disruption of utility services is expected during these installations.
The culvert on Depot Street between Main Street and College Street is now open to local traffic only. Academy Street is also currently open but will need to be closed sometime in the future for The Greeneville Water Commission to finish their work in that area. We will update everyone when we have more information on that future closure.
Here are some current pictures of the intersection of College Street and Depot Street, the completed culvert, and the intersection of Main Street and Depot Street:
A big consideration for this large project was how it would be accomplished in a timely manner and in a way that would cause the least amount of disruption possible. Giving us a beautiful Depot Street is the goal but we knew it would be important to finish the high traffic areas as soon as possible. That way, our local businesses could reap the benefits of having the new streetscape installed sooner rather than having to wait for the entirety of Depot Street to be complete. For this reason, we started the project with Depot Street between Irish Street and Main Street, where most of our Depot Street businesses are located. So, we'd like to share the rough order of operations for how we plan to have most of the work completed and this block much more accessible by the end of September:
Storm drain installation: completed
Water and sewer installation: in process. Expected to be complete by the end of July.
Lighting (conduit and pole foundations): in process. Expected to be complete by end of August.
Grade work: not yet started. Anticipated to start after July 4th. Complete by mid-August.
Trench drain installation: not yet started. Complete by mid-August.
Silva Cell installation: not yet started complete by mid-August
Sidewalks, pavers, roadway: expected to start in August and hopefully be completed by the end of September.
Landscaping: depends on the planting season but hopefully this fall.
For an extremely informational explanation on what goes into grading all sorts of different projects, including our streetscape, check out this great video by the Practical Engineering channel on Youtube. This process is extremely important to ensuring that our project will be structurally sound for decades to come. Enjoy!
